Completion of Five Gantries Marks Key Progress in ATMB’s Free-Flow Tolling Project

Emovis, a global expert in toll-based mobility solutions, in partnership with the Mont Blanc Motorways and Tunnel (ATMB), has successfully installed five advanced free-flow tolling gantries along the A40 motorway corridor. This milestone represents a decisive step toward the full deployment of a barrier-free tolling system scheduled to become operational in 2027.

ATMB, a public limited company majority-owned by the French State and local authorities, manages key transport infrastructure in the Haute-Savoie region, including the A40 motorway, the RN2025 national road, and the Mont Blanc Tunnel. The organization plays a strategic role in enabling cross-border mobility between France, Switzerland, and Italy while advancing sustainable transport transformation.

The free-flow tolling program aims to replace traditional toll plazas with intelligent infrastructure that enables uninterrupted traffic flow. The installation of the five gantries constitutes the physical backbone of this transformation.

The deployment was executed in structured phases between 2025 and 2026. The first phase, completed at the end of 2025, included two gantries located at Saint-Pierre-en-Faucigny and Bonneville. The second phase was carried out in 2026 with three additional installations: Arthaz (P5) in March, Magland (P1) in April, and Vougy (P2) in May 2026, completing the corridor infrastructure.

From a network perspective, the system has been designed to operate in both directions of the A40 motorway. In total, it covers 10 traffic lanes (five gantry locations per direction), ensuring full bidirectional monitoring and seamless data capture across the corridor.

Each gantry spans approximately 30 meters and is equipped with around 70 sensors and high-performance cameras. These systems enable vehicle detection, license plate recognition, and electronic toll tag reading. The collected data allows full journey reconstruction and precise toll calculation based on vehicle category and distance traveled.

Supporting works include the construction of technical shelters housing IT and power systems, as well as civil engineering works to ensure a safe and stable installation across the motorway. Integration testing ensures operational reliability, data accuracy, and full compliance with GDPR requirements.

Once operational in 2027, the system will eliminate the need for physical toll booths along a 58-kilometer stretch between Passy and Etrembières, improving traffic fluidity and reducing congestion. Environmental benefits are also expected, including an estimated reduction of 2,500 tonnes of CO₂ emissions annually.

With this fifth gantry in Vougy, ATMB and Emovis have reached a key milestone in the delivery of France’s future free-flow tolling system. This achievement reflects a shared commitment to innovation, operational excellence, and sustainable mobility transformation.
